Join my online pattern design course and learn the essentials of creating patterns for textiles, wallpapers, fashion, and paper goods. With over 25 years of experience and collaborations with brands like IKEA, Lindex, Akademibokhandeln, Midbec Wallpapers, Borås tapeter and Sandberg wallpaper, I’ll guide you through the craft of building beautiful, seamless repeats.

Through a variety of hands-on, analog methods, I will guide you in understanding how to design patterns that flow beautifully and repeat seamlessly. We’ll mostly work with gouache, paper, scissors, and a ruler—because the foundation of well-crafted patterns lies in traditional craftsmanship. I’ll also briefly show you how I digitize my designs for printing.

With over 25 years of experience designing patterns for textiles and wallpapers, I will help you explore and develop your own unique creations. More than 300 Swedish-speaking and 40 English-speaking students from all over the world have already taken this course, and I’m thrilled to once more offering it in English!

Starting 4th of november, you will receive a weekly mail with an assignment. I will also host a weekly live broadcast in a closed Instagram account, where I introduce each week’s exercise and answer your questions along the way. New inspirational materials will be posted on the account in between the lessons to get the creativity flowing.

The course runs for 6 weeks. Plan to spend about 3 hours per week on your assignments—but be warned, it’s easy to get completely absorbed in the world of pattern design!

COURSE CONTENT

• Different analog techniques for creating patterns, such as post-it notes, paper folding, and the puzzle method

• Understanding straight repeats and half-drop repeats—what they are and when to use them

• How to build a pattern: layout and composition

• Pattern “skeletons”: winding, medallion, surface, mirroring, layering

• Collection thinking: how to build a cohesive series of patterns

• Working with gouache—what it is and how to use it

• Digitizing your hand-painted patterns (an introduction)

COURSE LAYOUT

Starts Tuesday, November 4th. The course runs for 6 weeks, with the last lesson on December 9th 2025.

Every week you will receive a course letter as a pdf by email with one or more tasks to work through. The course letters become a compendium that you can print and save. It is important to download this course letter during the same week.

You get access to a closed Instagram account where every week I broadcast a Live with the week’s lesson. You will have opportunity to ask questions and I will show you how to do it. The Live is saved so you can watch when it suits you best. On the Insta account, tips & tricks are also posted in connection with the weekly task.

MATERIALS YOU MAY NEED IN THE COURSE

• Pencil, eraser, ruler, scissors and tape

• Thin post-it notes and felt-tip pen

• Watercolor paper A4

• Gouache and/or watercolor Brushes for gouache or watercolor.
